MJ, the new Michael Jackson musical picked up four Tony Awards at the 75th Annual Tony Awards held in New York City on 12 June 2022.
Created by Tony Award-winning Director/Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris, After The Rain) and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Ruined, Sweat), with music by Michael Jackson, the show was one of the favourite at this year’s Tony awards with a total of ten nominations.
Wheeldon won best choreography adding a second Tony to his mantle following his 2015 Best Choreographer win for An American in Paris.
Myles Frost won the award for Best Musical Actor for his role in ‘MJ’. The 22-year-old embodies the music legend Michael Jackson in the Broadway hit. The newcomer beat out two veterans of the theatre and film scene: Hugh Jackman (nominated for ‘The Music Man’) and Billy Crystal (nominated for ‘Mr. Saturday Night’), who also entered the race as Best Male Musical Actor.
The show also won in the musical categories ‘Best Sound Design’, ‘Best Choreography’ and ‘Best Lighting Design’.
