Enjoy an evening of show tunes from the likes of Marvin Hamlisch, Michel Legrand and Stephen Sondheim

We are thrilled to present the world première of Maria Friedman’s brand-new show celebrating the brilliance of Marvin Hamlisch, Michel Legrand and Stephen Sondheim. Friedman performed with each multiple times, becoming a much-lauded interpreter of their works. Now with friends old and new, she explores the legacies of these titans of 20th century musical theatre.

This unique event will see Maria & friends showcase songs from many of these ‘Giants in the skies’ greatest works – Yentl, A Chorus Line, The Way We Were, Company, Follies and many more – including Broadway Baby, Send in the Clowns, A Piece Of Sky, At The Ballet and Nothing – with entertaining and personal memories that make a Friedman cabaret a night to remember.

This show promises to be a celebration worthy of some of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

Maria Friedman & Friends – Legacy is booking until 17 April 2022 at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London.

Maria Friedman and Friends – Legacy extends at Menier Chocolate Factory
Maria Friedman & Friends - Legacy at the Menier Chocolate Factory is extending its run due to demand for tickets. The concert show was originally slated to end on 20 March, but will now run until 17 April 2022. Award-winning West End actress Maria Friedman pays tribute to three great musicals composers she has both worked and become friends with: Stephen Sondheim, who died last year aged 91, Marvin Hamlisch and Michel Legrand. The show is produced by the Menier Chocolate Factory in association with Maria's sister, West End and Broadway impresario Sonia Friedman. Sonia and Maria will work with each other again this Autumn in New York, when Maria will direct Daniel Radcliffe as Charley in Merrily We Roll Along at New York Theatre Workshop. The revival will be based on her award-wining production at the Menier. Also, in May Maria Friedman will co-stage with Matthew Bourne a special tribute concert celebrating the life and work of Stephen Sondheim, called Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends at the Sondheim Theatre. The concert will feature a wealth of stars including Bernadette Peters, Judi Dench, Elaine Paige, Hannah Waddingham, Michael Ball, Imelda Staunton and more. In Maria Friedman & Friends - Legacy, three-time Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman performs songs penned by these three extraordinary composers, including Broadway Baby, Losing My Mind, A Piece Of Sky and Nothing - interspersed with personal memories and anecdotes. The show is a collaboration with musical director and pianist, Theo Jamieson, and with fellow performers Matthew White, Ian McLarnon, Alfie Friedman and Desmonda Cathabel, and a choir from the Royal Academy of Music. Jamieson is accompanied by Paul Moylan on Double Bass, and James Powell on Percussion. Book tickets to Maria Friedman & Friends - Legacy at the Menier Chocolate Factory

Daniel Radcliffe to star in off-Broadway production of Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, Maria Friedman directs
Daniel Radcliffe will return to the stage later this year in a new production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along. Directed by Maria Friedman, and produced by her sister Sonia Friedman, the revival will run at New York Theatre Workshop and complete their 2022/23 season. Radcliffe, who made his Broadway debut in the 2011 revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really, will play Charley, one of three longtime show business pals whose friendship is presented in reverse chronological order, from its sad dissolution to its hopeful beginning. Since completing the final instalment in the series of eight Harry Potter films in 2010, Radcliffe has continued to prove himself a diverse talent on stage and screen. His stage credits include a revival of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, co-starring Alun Cumming and the 50th anniversary production of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, both at the Old Vic Theater in London; the Donmar’s Broadway production of Privacy (2016); Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan in London and on Broadway; and The Lifespan of a Fact at Studio 54 Theatre with Bobby Cannavale, and Cherry Jones. Based on the original play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, Merrily We Roll Along features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. Joining Friedman on the creative team will be choreographer Tim Jackson. The production is co-produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, the Menier Chocolate Factory and Patrick Catullo. Full casting and creatives to be announced. A West End transfer has not been announced at this stage. Radcliffe will soon appear on screen inThe Lost City alongside Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum and recently wrapped production on the film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Maia Friedman is currently starring in Maria Friedman & Friends – Legacy at the Menier Chocolate Factory, celebrating the brilliance of Marvin Hamlisch, Michel Legrand and Stephen Sondheim. Since his death last year aged 91, there has been much talk of Sondheim revivals and tributes both in London and New York. A tribute concert is planned in May at the Sondheim Theatre in London called Sonheim's Old Friends and starring Judi Dench, Bernadette Peter, Hannah Waddingham and more; and Terry Gilliam is set to direct Sondheim's Into the Woods at the Theatre Royal Bath before a hoped for West End transfer.

Sondheim tribute concert Legacy by Maria Friedman heads to Menier Chocolate Factory
Award-winning West End actress Maria Friedman is to headline a special series of concerts at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Titled Maria Friedman & Friends - Legacy, the show will tribute three great musicals composers: Stephen Sondheim, who died last year aged 91, Marvin Hamlisch and Michel Legrand. The show will run at the Menier from 3 - 20 March 2022, and is co-produced by Friedman. In a statement to the press, Maria said: "This event was brought about by a desire to sing, to share and to join together in celebration of some of the greatest composers of our time. These past two years have starved us of the connection and depth of emotion that brilliant music and song can evoke – and we want to bring that back in the beautifully intimate space at the Menier, and enable audiences to revel in the legacy of my much-missed friends, these extraordinary artists – Hamlisch, Legrand and Sondheim. I can't wait to share it with you." The show's musical director and pianist will be Theo Jamieson, and other performers include Matthew White, Ian McLarnon, Alfie Friedman, Desmonda Cathabel, and a choir from the Royal Academy of Music. Songs featured in the concert will come from shows including Yentl, A Chorus Line, The Way We Were, Company, Follies and many more – including Broadway Baby, Send in the Clowns, A Piece Of Sky, At The Ballet and Nothing. Maria Friedman is a triple Olivier Award winner, and her previous successful concert shows have included Maria Friedman Re-arranged – which transferred to the West End.
