Everybody's Talking About Jamie - The Movie

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie movie scoops BAFTA nomination

Hit stage-to-movie musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has scored a BAFTA nomination at this year’s awards.

The film has been nominated for Outstanding British Film, alongside movies including Belfast, Cyrano, House of Gucci and No Time to Die.

The movie version of the musical was directed by Jonathan Butterell, who directed the original stage version, with co-direction from the show’s writers – Dan Gillespie Sells (music) and Tom MacRae (book and lyrics). The movie was released last year, starring Max Harwood, Sarah Lancashire as his mum Margaret and Richard E Grant as Hugo Battersby. It’s currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

The stage version originally premiered at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield before transferring to the West End’s Apollo Theatre in 2017. The show ran at the Apollo until last September when it took a break. There’s still hope it will return to the West End, hopefully in 2022.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is also currently on big UK and US tours.

Other musicals to make the nominations include Steven Spielberg’s new version of Bernstein/Sondheim musical West Side Story, which scored 5 nominations including best supporting actress for Ariana DeBose, best supporting actor for Mike Faist, best casting, best production design and best sound, but missed out in the Best film category. Ariana DeBose is also nominated in the Rising Star category, voted by members of the public.

However, the recent movie version of Tick, Tick… Boom!, the Jonathan Larson musical starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), was overlooked by the BAFTA voters.
