March 16, 2012
RSC’s Matilda leads Olivier Awards race with 10 nominations

Matilda at the Cambridge Theatre gets 10 Olivier nods
The RSC’s Matilda The Musical has dominated this year’s Olivier Awards nominations, being recognised in 10 categories – the maximum possible for a musical.
Matilda’s nominations include Best New Musical, a collective Best Actress in a musical nod for all four actresses sharing the role of Matilda, plus Bertie Carvel for Best Actor in a musical, Paul Kaye for Best Performance in a supporting role in a musical and Matthew Warchus for Best Director.
Matilda faces competition in the Best New Musical category from Stiles and Drewe-penned Betty Blue Eyes, Ghost The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre, which secured 5 nominations and is set to open on Broadway next month, the National’s London Road and Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
In the subsidised theatre, the National has taken the lead with a bumper crop of 15 nominations for productions including its smash-hit play One Man, Two Guvnors, which is also transferring to Broadway and has just opened in London again at the Theatre Royal Haymarket; musical London Road, for which Rufus Norris is nominated in the Best Director category; and Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein, although the movie director and Olympic games Opening Ceremony creator was over-looked in the Best Director category. The National’s Grief and Collaborators were also nominated.
One Man, Two Guvnors secured five nominations, including Best New Play, Best Actor for James Cordon and Nicholas Hytner for Best Director.
Cordon is up against fellow National alumni Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in the Best Actor category, who share the nomination for their alternate performances as Frankenstein and the monster in Danny Boyle’s hit production, David Haig for The Madness Of George III, Douglas Hodge for Inadmissible Evidence and Jude Law for Anna Christie at the Donmar Warehouse.
The Best Actress category celebrates an eclectic mix of performances and performers with Anna Christie’s Ruth Wilson nominated, alongside Marcia Warren for The Ladykillers, Lesley Manville for Grief, Kristin Scott Thomas for Betrayal and Celia Imrie for Noises Off – which is transferring to the Novello Theatre shortly.
Trevor Nunn’s production of Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path has been nominated in the Best Revival category alongside Noises Off, Much Ado About Nothing and Anna Christie, with last year’s Best Actress in a Musical winner Sheridan Smith nominated for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for Flare Path.
The Best Actress in a Musical category features Kate Fleetwood for London Road, Sarah Lancashire for Betty Blue Eyes, Scarlett Strallen for Singin’ in the Rain and the four young Matildas, and in the Best Actor in a Musical category Matilda’s Bertie Carvel will fight it out against Nigel Lindsay for Shrek The Musical, Reece Shearsmith for Betty Blue Eyes and Paulo Szot for South Pacific.
This year’s Best Musical Revivals include Crazy For You, which is closing this weekend at the Novello Theatre, Singin’ In The Rain at the Palace, South Pacific and The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium.
In opera, English National Opera received six nominations, including an Outstanding Achievement in Opera nomination, and in dance Sadler’s Wells dominates the awards with five nominations.
Other shows garnering nominations include Jerusalem, The Children’s Hour, Lend Me A Tenor The Musical, Derren Brown: Svengali, Midnight Tango, Potted Potter and The Tiger Who Came To Tea.
The awards will be announced in a ceremony at the Royal Opera House on 15 April 2012.

Olivier Awards – History
February 12, 2012
THE FIRST AWARDS
The first Olivier awards were called the The Society of West End Theatre Awards, and were held at a ceremony at the Café Royal on a Sunday in December 1976.
LAURENCE OLIVIER
The awards became the Laurence Olivier Awards in 1984 as a tribute to one of British theatre’s greatest ever practitioners. In his 60 year career Lord Olivier proved himself as a outstanding actor, an accomplished director and he was appointed as the first Artistic Director of the National Theatre in 1962. Read more about Laurence Olivier here.
THE AWARD
Originally a blue Wedgwood urn (hence why they were originally dubbed the Urnies!), the award is now a solid bronze statuette of Laurence Olivier as Henry V at the Old Vic in 1937, affectionately known as the Larries.
PAST VENUES
The Awards started in 1976 at the Cafe Royal in London. The Grosvenor House Hotel is the venue most associated with the awards. West End theatres to host the awards include the Victoria Palace, the Lyceum, the National Theatre, the Albery (now the Noël Coward), the Shaftesbury, the London Palladium, the Dominion and the Piccadilly Theatre. Last year’s Awards were held at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
PAST WINNERS
See a full list of past Olivier Awards winners by award category, here.
THE AWARDS ON TV
The first awards were broadcast by the BBC as part of their Nationwide programme in 1976. In 1981 the BBC produced the first dedicated Olivier Awards programme, which aired on BBC1 and continued each year until 1992, when it moved to BBC2. The BBC dropped the awards from TV after the 2003 ceremony. In 2010 the awards were broadcast online. 2011 saw the awards return to television, via the BBC’s red button service for digital, satellite and cable viewers, and they were broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

OLIVIER AWARDS 2012 – WINNERS ANNOUNCED – Click here
Welcome to our microsite celebrating this year’s Olivier Awards, held at the Royal Opera House on Sunday 15 April 2012.
The annual awards, which are organised by the Society of London Theatre, are the most popular and important in the British theatre calendar. Last year’s Awards had a major overhaul, with MasterCard sponsoring the event and a glitzy ceremony held at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Now in their 36th year, 2012 saw the awards develop even further, with MasterCard returning as headline sponsors and a glittering ceremony held at the Royal Opera House in London.
Also new for 2012, a live relay of the show was broadcast to New York, where an invited audience of British stars on Broadway celebrated the awards.
The awards were once again hosted by much-loved theatre stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, who are starring in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End.
The BBC covered the awards, including the red carpet arrivals hosted by Anneka Rice, and the ceremony, broadcast on TV via the Red Button, and on BBC Radio 2 and online.

Olivier Awards to take place at Opera House, with live relay to Broadway
January 25, 2012
The Society of London Theatre has announced that the annual Olivier Awards, now in its 36th year, will take place for the first time in its entirety at the Royal Opera House, London on Sunday 15 April 2012.
Sponsored for a second year by MasterCard, this year the awards will also get a live show relay to New York, where an invited audience of VIPs including British stars on Broadway and high profile industry figures will gather to celebrate the awards.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Iʹm incredibly proud of the continuing success of so many British productions on Broadway, a tribute to the talent and quality to be found here. London goes centre‐stage in this Olympic and Paralympic year, whilst the Olivier Awards put our superb theatre right in the spotlight. The special event being staged at this yearʹs awards is a taste of the amazing things we have planned for a summer like no other and we look forward to welcoming millions of Americans to the capital, who can take advantage of our award‐winning shows on sale throughout the Games and beyond.”
Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, said: “New York City and London share a long tradition of theatrical productions that have transferred from Broadway to the West End and vice versa, so itʹs a pleasure to welcome the Olivier Awards to our side of the pond in this very special way. It doesnʹt matter if you spell it theater or theatre; musicals and plays are a top attraction for tourists, and we look forward to hosting more than a million visitors from the United Kingdom in the coming year.”Another addition for 2012 will be an awards celebration in Covent Garden piazza, where theatre‐lovers can gather to enjoy a free big‐screen live show relay and other entertainment including live performances from some of the West End’s major shows. The event will be presented in conjunction with Magic 105.4, and hosted by breakfast presenter Neil Fox, alongside West End leading lady Louise Dearman.
The Awards will be hosted once again by Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, stars of Sweeney Todd at the Adelphi Theatre. The BBC will be giving the awards extensive live coverage on television (via the Red Button), on Radio 2 and online, with red carpet coverage from 5pm and the Ceremony starting at 6pm.
Julian Bird, Chief Executive of the Society of London Theatre and Executive Producer of the Awards, said: “This year’s 36th Olivier Awards with MasterCard will reflect a particularly star‐studded year for London theatre, and the plethora of high calibre sell‐out productions for which audiences have been queuing around the block. I am delighted we have been able to extend our celebrations to New York, and this connection is particularly apt in a year in which we are working closer than ever with VisitBritain and London & Partners to deliver a warm welcome to theatre audiences during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.“
SOLT will announce the full list of awards nominations at a press briefing at the Mayfair Hotel at 12 noon on Thursday 15 March 2012. For the first time, the nominations will also be broadcast live online simultaneously at www.olivierawards.com, reflecting the significant profile of the awards around the world.
Once again, in 2012, BBC Radio 2 partners with the Olivier Awards on the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award, to launch on the Elaine Paige show on Sunday 5 February.Established in 1976, the Laurence Olivier Awards celebrate the world‐class status of London’s theatre and are Britain’s most prestigious stage honours. The Awards were relaunched in 2011 with a new strategic partnership with MasterCard, the Olivier Audience Award supported by BBC Radio 2 and a live broadcast of the Awards Ceremony via the BBC Red Button.
The UK’s most prestigious theatre awards started in 1976 as The Society of West End Theatre Awards, becoming the Laurence Olivier Awards in 1984.
