Big crowds for West End Live 2010

Over 250,000 people gather in Leicester Square for free West End theatre event.

West End Live, a free event held in the West End this weekend, showcased the best of London theatre and attracted over a quarter of a million people.

Now in its sixth year and the largest free theatre festival in the world, the event featured the casts of some of London’s biggest shows including Thriller Live, Disney’s The Lion King, Legally Blonde, All The Fun Of The Fair, Tap Dogs, We Will Rock You, Billy Elliot, Wicked, Hair, Chicago, Love Never Dies, Avenue Q, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Burn the Floor, Grease, Mamma Mia!, Stomp, Dirty Dancing and Jersey Boys.

An array of West End stars performed at the event including Ramin Karimloo (Love Never Dies), Sheridan Smith (Legally Blonde), Patina Miller (Sister Act), Daniel Boys (Wolfboy) and Ryan Molloy (Jersey Boys).

Councillor Robert Davis of Westminster City Council, who organised the event, said: “Without doubt, this has been our biggest and best West End LIVE. We’ve seen spectacular performances from some of the nation’s favourite shows.”

Nica Burns, President of the Society of London Theatre said: “London has the best theatre in the world and West End LIVE is a fantastic opportunity for people to sample some of the West End’s most popular shows for free.” The success of the past weekend suggests that a quarter of a million satisfied theatre fans agree.

West End Live this weekend

A free event will be held in London this weekend, showcasing the best of West End theatre.

West End Live will feature the casts of some of London’s biggest shows, performing at a free event this weekend in Leicester Square. On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June 2010, hundreds of West End performers will gather to showcase the best of London theatre. Careful juggling by the organisers has enabled the casts of over 25 shows to appear live on a stage in Leicester Square in between performing their matinee and evening performances.

The line-up for the celebration has now been confirmed, with Brazil! Brazil! launching the weekend at 11am on Saturday.

Shows which have agreed to participate in the family event include Thriller Live, Disney’s The Lion King, Legally Blonde, All The Fun Of The Fair, Tap Dogs, We Will Rock You, Billy Elliot, Wicked, Hair, Chicago, Love Never Dies, Avenue Q, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Burn the Floor, Grease, Mamma Mia!, Stomp, Dirty Dancing and Jersey Boys.

West End stars will be out in force to entertain audiences at the event,  including Daniel Boys (Wolfboy), who will be hosting proceedings from 12 noon to 6pm on Sunday 20 June, Sheridan Smith (Legally Blonde), Kerry Ellis (Oliver!), Patina Miller (Sister Act) and Hannah Waddingham (Into The Woods).

To get the party started early, the cast of Wicked will also be performing on Friday 18 June 2010 at Cardinal Place, Victoria between 12.30 and 1pm for a pre West End LIVE performance.

The weekend event will feature exhibits and activities including the London Film Museum, Science Museum, V&A Museum, Little Angel Puppet theatre and Forbidden Planet.

Linzi Hateley is one of the most accomplished and experienced stars of the West End stage. She had her first break at only 17 years old starring in the infamous RSC production of Stephen King’s horror Carrie, taking the show to Broadway and enjoying a ‘Theatre World Award for Best Newcomer.

Her subsequent and numerous theatre credits cover much of the recent history of the West End including Eponine in Les Miserables, an Olivier-nominated role as the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Rizzo in Grease at the Dominion, Into The Woods, The Rink, Oliver!, On Your Toes, Martha in the RSC’s The Secret Garden, Roxy in Chicago and Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Plus cabaret, movies and recording three solo albums.

The casts of London’s biggest shows are being allowed out of their theatres again this year to perform at the West End’s annual live event in Leicester Square.

West End Live is a weekend of free entertainment on 19 and 20 June that promises to showcase the best of London’s Theatreland.

Running in a variety of formats for a number of years, including the Society of London Theatre’s Fair in the Square events in the 1990s, this year’s two-day event initiated by Westminster City Council will see 23 shows perform on a stage in Leicester Square.

Shows which have agreed to participate in the family event include Thriller Live, The Lion King, Legally Blonde, All The Fun Of The Fair, Tap Dogs, We Will Rock You, Billy Elliot, Wicked, Hair, Chicago, Love Never Dies, Avenue Q, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Burn the Floor, Grease, Mamma Mia!, Stomp, Dirty Dancing, The Fantasticks and Jersey Boys.

West End stars will be out in force to entertain audiences at the event,  including Sheridan Smith (Legally Blonde), Kerry Ellis (Oliver!), Patina Miller (Sister Act) and Hannah Waddingham (Into The Woods). More stars are expected to be announced shortly.

Last year’s event attracted around 250,000 people.

CASTING: Billy, Mamma and Chicago

Three big West End shows have announced new cast members, including EastEnder’s Emma Barton joining the cast of Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre.

BILLY ELLIOT

From 31 May Genevieve Lemon will join the cast of Billy Elliot in London at the Victoria Palace Theatre. She will play Billy’s dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson, played in the movie by Julie Walters. Australian actress Lemon has appeared in numerous musicals and plays including Billy Elliot in Sydney.

Also 12 year old Aaron Watson from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, will join the cast to become the 23 young boy to play the title role of Billy in the West End.

MAMMA MIA!

Harriet Thorpe will join the cast of Mamma Mia! at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London from 14 June in the role of Tanya. She is best-known for her TV roles in the Brittas Empire and Absolutely Fabulous, and stage roles include Madame Morrible in Wicked. Other current cast members include West End star Linzi Hateley and Jessie May as mother and daughter Donna and Sophie Sheridan.

CHICAGO

EastEnders star Emma Barton, who played Honey Mitchell in the BBC soap, will return to the London stage from 26 April to star as Roxie Hart in Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre in London. Taking over from Ruthie Henshall, and appearing for only 12 weeks in the role, she returns to the role after performing in the UK tour of the show. Her other stage work includes The Secret Garden for the RSC and Grease.

Also starring in the show will be Vivien Carter (We Will Rock You), as Velma Kelly, Terence Maynard as Billy Flynn and Adam Stafford as Amos Hart.

Knighthood for National Chief

Nicholas Hytner and Patrick Stewart Knighted in New Year’s Honours List

The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list includes a number of high-profile theatre leaders and stars.

Acclaimed stage and screen actor Patrick Stewart and National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner both receive knighthoods in recognition of their services to drama.

Also Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd, actress Margeret Tyzack, Barbican Centre artistic director Graham Sheffield, founder of the National Youth Music Theatre Jeremy James Taylor and director and arts chief Graham Devlin are appointed CBEs. Artistic director of Northern Ballet Theatre David Nixon and Manchester Royal Exchange artistic director Braham Murray are appointed OBEs.

Nicholas Hytner

Nicholas Hytner was said to be “delighted and flattered” to receive a knighthood. He has been artistic director of the National Theatre since 2003, with many direction credits including The History Boys, The Habit of Art, The Madness of King George and Miss Saigon.

Patrick Stewart, who received an OBE in 2001, is perhaps best known for his screen roles in Star Trek and The X Men. He recently appeared in Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket alongside Sir Ian McKellen. He said, that, “this is an honour that embraces those actors, directors and creative teams who have in these recent years helped fill my life with inspiration, companionship and sheer fun.”

Phyllida Lloyd directed both the stage and screen productions of international hit musical Mamma Mia! and said that her CBE was “a complete surprise. I feel humbled”.

Margeret Tyzack is a veteran theatre performer who most recently starred alongside Helen Mirren in Phedre at the National Theatre. Last year she appeared in Enid Bagnold’s The Chalk Garden at the Donmar Warehouse, for which she won the Best Actress award in the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards and the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Actress.
