Anthems starring Brian May and Kerry Ellis

Anthems starring Brian May and Kerry Ellis

ANTHEMS: The Concert is the brand new, specially created, live version of Anthems, the stunning Kerry Ellis hit debut album produced by Brian May. This Gala Concert brings together West End and Broadway singing sensation Kerry Ellis (We Will Rock You, Wicked, Chess in Concert and Oliver!) and legendary Queen star Brian May in their first full-length performance.

For this unique production, Kerry Ellis and Brian May will perform live all of the acclaimed Anthems album, including May’s special rock-orchestral settings of songs which Kerry has made her own, and new material, including songs written especially for Kerry.

Under the Creative Direction of Brian May, the concert will feature the Anthems Ensemble of hand-picked rock musicians, the City of London Philharmonic, and the West End Chorus and Dancers – making this a truly spectacular one-off event on the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday of the Royal Wedding.

Featured as special guests will be Adam Pascal, the original star of Rent, Aida and Chess in Concert, and Escala, the stunning all-girl electric string quartet who have caused a sensation ever since the 2008 final of Britain’s Got Talent.

ANTHEMS: The Concert is to be for the benefit of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Royal Mail release Musicals Stamps

February 24, 2011

The Royal Mail is celebrating seven decades of UK stage musicals with a set of stamps, issued today.

Royal Mail Musicals Stamps set

Royal Mail Musicals Stamps set

Eight shows are featured: Queen’s We Will Rock You, West End classic Oliver!, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Me and My Girl – first produced in 1937, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, Elton John’s Billy Elliot, and (slightly bizarrely) Return to the Forbidden Planet.

Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen helped launch the stamps at the Dominion Theatre today, and said: “We’re thrilled that We Will Rock You has been immortalised on a Royal Mail stamp. The image on the stamp takes us back to when we were touring as Queen and embodies the rock and roll music that we wanted to celebrate in We Will Rock You the musical.”

We know they can’t include everything but they have left out some biggies: Andrew Lloyd Webber doesn’t feature, which is odd given that he is probably Britain’s most successful living musicals composer. And the world’s longest running musical, Les Miserables, is strangely absent (yes, it was written by two French men, but the production is most definitely British). And no Leslie Bricusse, Noel Coward, Ivor Novello or Sandy Wilson work?

Show co-creator Brian May said: “Brenda is irrepressible, scary, funny, and a killer singer.  The lot!  She delighted audiences on the WWRY tour of Britain last year.  I have no doubt that she will Rock the Dominion.”

Other cast in the long-running show include Garry Lake, Alex Bourne, Peter Murphy, Sabrina Aloueche, Ian Carlyle and Louise Bowden. Brenda Edwards’ previous roles include Mama Morton in Chicago The Musical and Pearl Pastor in Carmen Jones at the Royal Festival Hall.
