Rumours of stage musical adaptation of Behind The Candelabra on Broadway.
Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra debuted last night on HBO in the US ahead of its UK and France theatrical release on 7 June 2013. Starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, the Steven Soderbergh directed movie, with a screenplay by Richard LaGravenese, also stars Dan Aykroyd, Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, Tom Papa, Paul Reiser and Debbie Reynolds.
The film covers the final years of the flamboyant Vegas entertainer Liberace, who at the time was the richest performer in the world, and his secretive five year affair with Scott Thorson. Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Thorson put in award-worthy performances in the film, which has already been tipped for Golden Globes success (although isn’t eligible for the Oscars because of its TV rather than theatrical run in the US).
The movie is based on Scott Thorson’s book Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace and rumours are now swirling that the book may be turned into a big-budget Broadway musical.
A Liberace stage musical bio seems a no brainer, providing ample opportunity for fabulous costumes and set-pieces, great songs from a ready-made back catalogue, award-garnering performances, a fascinating story and endless amounts of cam! Our sources tell us that it’s too early for Broadway venue hunting but that a number of producers are interested and discussions are underway with Scott Thorson for the stage rights and talent.
Our bets are on Hugh Jackman as Liberace and Neil Patrick Harris as Scott Thorson but what do we know?!
