Casting has been announced for the revival of Rita, Sue and Bob Too at the Royal Court Theatre.

Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play will star James Atheron (Coronation Street, Hollyoaks) as Bob, Taj Atwel (East is East, West End) as Rita and Gemma Dobson, who makes her theatrical debut as Sue.

The cast also features Sally Bankes (East is East, West End) as Mother, Samantha Robinson (Screwed, 503) as Michelle and David Walker (Hangmen, West End) as Father.

Dunbar’s acclaimed play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 1982, when she was just 19. Told with wicked humour and startling insight the play is a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future, hungry for adult adventure.

Max Stafford-Clark who returns to direct this major revival said “When Andrea wrote her first two plays, she was a teenager from a rough council estate who’d never been to the theatre. Now, thirty-five years after its premiere, Rita Sue and Bob Too takes its place in the Octagon and Royal Court’s seasons in the role of Classic Play. It’s one of the privileges of my career that Andrea’s astute, fresh and funny writing reached my desk, and it is exciting to bring her vivid, albeit alarming world to life again with these fine actors.”

Prior to its Royal Court run the show will play at Bolton’s Octogon Theatre in September 2017.

Rita, Sue and Bob Too will run from 9 January 2018 until 27 January 2018 at the Royal Court Theatre.
