John Boyega stars in Woyzeck at the Old Vic Theatre
John Boyega makes his Old Vic debut in a new version of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck by the multi-award winning playwright Jack Thorne.
Widely regarded as the first “modern” drama, Woyzeck is based on the true story of a military barber who killed his mistress in a fit of jealousy and was sentenced to death.
Thorne’s production transports Woyzeck to 1980’s Cold War Berlin, where Woyzeck, played by Boyega, is a British squaddie, desperately short on money, with a new baby and wife to feed.
The 24 year old actor from Peckham, South London first came to prominence in the low-budget sci-fi film Attack The Block, and has since become an international star as Finn in JJ Abrams’ rebooted Star Wars franchise. His forthcoming films include director Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, Star Wars The Last Jedi and Pacific Rim: Uprising.
Woyzeck runs from 20 May 2017 until 24 June 2017 at the Old Vic Theatre.
