Double Oscar award winning actress and former MP Glenda Jackson makes a dramatic return to the stage following a 25-year absence to play Shakespeare’s tragic King Lear.

Jackson will take to the boards of the Old Vic Theatre in October 2016 in a production directed by Deborah Warner. Warner who has already produced two productions of Lear hadn’t anticipated a third staging but that was before Jackson came on board. She said ‘It is very exciting – biblical, really, Who else has done that?! Who else has done that in any art, in any medium?’

Jackson was apparently inspired to take on the role after seeing Spanish actress Nuria Espert, play Lear in Barcelona 13 months ago.

Jackson, 79, will begin rehearsals in late August 2016 with the production opening in October 2016.

Full casting is yet to be announced.
