A reviews round-up for The Lorax at the Old Vic Theatre.
The first stage adaptation of Dr Seuss’s magical story The Lorax has opened to positive reviews at the Old Vic Theatre. David Greig’s adaptation has been commended for the witty and rhyming verse, as well as the original songs provided by Charlie Fink, former frontman of Noah and the Whale.
Rob Howell and Finn Caldwell’s designs create the magical spectacle in which the richly weaved and spellbindingly told allegorical tale of human greed follows.
The reviews round-up include the Guardian, Time Out, Daily Telegraph, The Stage and the Evening Standard.
The Lorax is playing until 16 January 2016 at The Old Vic Theatre.
Inspired by Dr. Seuss’s (The Cat In the Hat, How The Grinch Stole Christmas!) classic tale, The Lorax tells of a moustachioed and cantankerous critter who’s on a mission to protect the earth from the greedy, tree-chopping, Thneed-knitting businessman known only as The Once-ler.
The Lorax blends theatrical invention, songs and zany humour in a timely and vibrant Christmas show with a message that will speak to audiences of all ages.
‘The best family show since Matilda .. what enchants is the inventiveness of Fink’s music, Finn Caldwell’s puppetry, Rob Howell’s designs and Max Webster’s production. The songs cover every style from political protest to Motown mashup, with Melanie La Barrie buoyantly leading a Supremes-style number appealing to the Once-ler’s desire for greatness.’Read the review
‘The Lorax’ is a great big, bright, fun dollop of family theatre.
Designer Rob Howell and puppet director Finn Caldwell conjures a world of looming structures, peculiar puppet animals and huge, steampunky machines. Plus: dancing! Songs! And a sly rhyming script from Greig that genuflects at the altar of Seuss while cheekily hauling him into the twenty-first century.’
‘The Lorax is (as you’d expect) weird, wacky and stuffed with bouncy comic rhymes. It’s also strident in its eco-friendly message. Fun but eminently disposable’Read the review
‘Delightfully grouchy puppet brings the charm to Dr Seuss fable’Read the review
‘The Lorax – the first stage production of the Dr Seuss story – turns out to be a family entertainment with both meaning and a message. The best kind of theatrical storytelling for all ages in a spellbinding production that could become a regular fixture’Read the review
