Funny Girl starring Sheridan Smith becomes Menier Chocolate Factory’s fastest selling show
The Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Funny girl starring Sheridan Smith has broken box office records to become the theatre’s fastest-selling show. The production which had been offered to members of the Menier Chocolate Factory prior to official release went on public sale at midnight and was sold out by 10.30am. Funny Girl begins preview on 20 November 2015 with an official opening on 2 December 2015 and runs until 5 March 2016.
Directed by Michael Mayer, Funny Girl has music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and book by Isobel Lennart, the show originally starred Barbra Streisand.
The musical is set in and around New York City just prior to and following World War I. Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice, awaiting the return of her husband, Nick Arnstein, from prison, reflects on their life together, with their story told through flashbacks. The score features classics such as “People”, “You Are Woman, I Am Man” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”.
The Menier Chocolate Factory production is presented in association with Sonia Friedman Productions and Scott Landis and is expected to receive a West End transfer when it finishes it run at the Chocolate Factory.
UPDATE: Funny Girl will transfer for a limited 12 week season from 9 April 2016 until 2 July at the Savoy Theatre
