Shakespeare In Love has announced the casting of its two stars, Tom Bateman as William Shakespeare and Lucy Briggs-Owen as Viola de Lesseps.

The major new stage production of Shakespeare in Love, based on the Oscar winning movie, has cast its two lead actors.

The play, which opens at the Noel Coward Theatre on 2 July 2014, will star Tom Bateman as William Shakespeare, played in the movie by Joseph Fiennes, and Lucy Briggs-Owen as Viola de Lesseps, played by Gwyneth Paltrow in the film.

The show has been adapted by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall from Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard’s screenplay, and will be directed and designed by Cheek By Jowl’s Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod.

Tom Bateman was recently seen in TV series Da Vinci’s Demons. Lucy Briggs-Owen is a stage and screen actress with recent credits including Cheek By Jowl’s Troilus And Cressida.
