Sad news reaches WestEndTheatre.com about a little black cat.

Little Osbourne, the Royal Court's cat

Little Osbourne, the Royal Court’s cat

Osbourne prowled the corridors (and sometimes the stage) of the Royal Court Theatre for many years, before retiring to spend his twilight years with the Court’s Costume Supervisor Jackie Orton in Camberwell.

Many believed he was named after Look Back in Anger author John Osborne, but apparently it might have been after Ozzy Osbourne, which is obviously far less Royal Court in theme but no less theatrical!

His eventful life was said to include biting John Cleese (“the theatre tiger bit me!’)

Jackie tells us that he was a cat with a lovely nature, but after years spent hanging out with cast and crew of the Court, he often struggled in retirement: “He couldn’t bear to be alone after all the drama of the theatre, so retiring was hard on him. Whilst at the Court, we would always lock him in the Green Room during shows, but he did occasionally manage to escape and make a guest appearance on stage”.

Around 18 (human) years of age, Osbourne passed on 31 October 2013. He will be missed by many.
