REVIEWS ROUND-UP

STAR RATING The Guardian

“Site-specific theatre takes on a new meaning with this glorious adaptation of E Nesbit’s 1906 children’s classic. First seen at the York National Railway Museum, Damien Cruden’s production has arrived at the former Eurostar platform at Waterloo station; and, for all its grandeur, this makes the perfect setting for a story that is, in part, about the romance of rail travel.”

STAR RATING The Daily Telegraph

“As for comedian Marcus Brigstocke, cast as the stationmaster Perks, he puts in a decent turn – all forbidding sideboards, stiff understatement and avuncular kindliness – but he’s no real match for the memory of Bernard Cribbins.”

STAR RATING The Independent

“It is no surprise that the designer, Joanna Scotcher, received an award earlier this year for her set. The detail is magnificent. The scenery floats are all on tracks, making for fluid and exciting blocking – the stage moving with the scampering feet of the actors, occasionally whizzing them or props out of sight at speed.”

STAR RATING Evening Standard

“Nesbit’s theme of goodness rewarded is never allowed to cloy and there’s a strong yet unobtrusive undercurrent of the socialism the writer held so dear. Unbeatable.”
